How to Research Your Financial Aid Options

Want to continue studying but worried by the state of your funds. If that sounds familiar, there is a solution! Financial aid is available to fund quality education. The best sources of information about scholarships and other aid are the financial aid officers at the school or college you’re thinking of joining. They will provide you with the full range of aid options available from the school funding system along with outside school options. Government Aid

The Federal Department of Education website provides links to financial aid resources. The Department of Education provides more than 60 percent of all available aids to students who want to continue higher education but need financial help. There are various types of financial aids, such as loans, grants, and work-study. Log onto the U.S. Department of Education website for more information on financial aid resources to continue your education. Though this is the largest source of college education funding, there are other Nonfederal aid programs that vary between individual schools and colleges. You can approach the school you are interested in to find out more about state and institutional aid.

FAFSA4caster

This is a new tool which helps students estimate their eligibility for federal financial aid. Apart from helping you estimate you eligibility, it also helps you fill the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal student Aid) form faster. Access the FAFSA4caster at FederalStudentAid.ed.gov.

“The Student Guide” and “Funding Your Education”

The U.S. Department of Education’s student aid programs are also available in two booklets – “The Student Guide” and “Funding Your Education”. “The Student Guide” contains extensive information on financial aid offered by the U.S. Department of Education. “Funding Your Education” provides general information on the federal financial aid programs and how to apply for them. You can get a copy of the FAFSA and these two booklets by calling the toll free number of the Federal Student Aid Information Center. You can also download a PDF version of both the booklets from the site at: Studentaid.Ed.gov.

Other Aid Sources

Students can also get financial aid from other Federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For information on such programs, visit Students.gov.

Your own state may also have loan programs. Visit Wdcrobcolp01.Ed.gov to access state agencies' web sites or the telephone number of your state agency.

It is always prudent to do a thorough search – you never know what sources of financial aid you may discover! Check to see if there are any tuition payment plans or scholarship programs given by the organizations your parents work for. Foundations and community organizations sometimes provide financial aid to students. Search the Internet and the reference sections in libraries to find out more.
