| Known as the "Heart of Dixie" because it was the capital of the Confederate States during the Civil War, Alabama is one of the leaders in aerospace, education, health care, banking, and some heavy industries. Its warm summers and mild winters bring an influx of tourists. The most visited spots are the white sand beaches and state parks. Camping in these parks is a part of the adventure. Alabama is home to America’s oldest research university, the University of Alabama, founded in 1831 as one of the first public colleges. Alabama has 14 four-year public universities and 17 other institutions recognized as private senior colleges. Alabama has many cultural events throughout the year like the Spirit of America Festival.
